Next Chance Right Now

I bought a donut from the Emerald Cafe in San Diego one morning with my good friend Aaron Barker. That was back in 2004. I didn't eat the thing that day and that seemed to puzzle a few of my friends who saw me transporting this donut back to my hotel room at the W. But it's been sitting in my large collection of unfinished donuts for a really long time. This donut was a first as well... its the first donut I consciencely bought for the purpose of using in a painting. So some 300 or so dount paintings later I'm finally building this one out right. I'm doing the frame in 24k gold leaf with hand cut raised lettering. Here's some highlights of the process.

Hand cutting the lettering and applying it to the frame.

Applying the red guilding coat.

The guilding is finished and ready to dry.

A coating of clear guilding adhesive was laid down and then the gold leaf was applied.
