Police seek shooting suspects

Metro Police Violent Crime detectives are pursuing leads after a double shooting that has left two men in hospital. The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. in the area of the 600 block of E 48 Street.

Early this morning, Central Precinct officers were dispatched to the area in relation to a robbery/shooting. When they arrived, officers found two men, 34-year-old Jason Statts and 31-year-old David Williams, both suffering from gunshot wounds to the neck. Both victims were transported to Memorial Medical Center. Statts’ injury was not life-threatening. However, the bullet that hit Williams resulted in traumatic injury that required surgery.

Witnesses tell police the two victims had just returned home after playing their first gig at Club Livewire downtown and headed to a friend’s home. The two victims arrived in separate cars, and when they got out of their cars, they were approached by two black males who asked if they "needed anything". The victims said, “no”, and thought the suspects walked off. A moment later, the two victims were shot in the neck. It appears only one shot was fired, that passed through Statts’ neck and lodged in Williams neck.

Police are looking for two black men, approximately 20 years old with natural hair or short dreads, who at the time of the incident, were wearing dark clothing. They were approximately 5’8” to 6’ in height. No further description is available at this time.

Police urge anyone with information regarding this crime to contact the Violent Crimes Unit of the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police at 912- 651-6728 or call CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020.

Jason Statts and David Williams, who are SCAD alumni, former SCAD employees, and members of the Savannah music scene, were shot while unloading gear after a concert. Statts and Williams have been in local acts I Am Not A Little Bus, El Toro, and, most recently, Surt [the Destroyer]. We wish for a speedy and safe recovery for them both.

LYRA UPDATE:

Well, in the messy aftermath of evil we find love and kindness.

A man who lives on the block where the incident happened, a complete stranger to me, found us at the hospital and brought us lunch, tooth brushes, chewing gum, drinks, snacks, everything anyone could need for a long vigil in a hospital waiting room.

The outpouring of friends was as tremendous today as it was yesterday. Everyone came bearing the wonderful tradition of food, love and support.

It was also a good day for both of our patients.

Dave was taken off of the ventilator today. He is still in a tremendous amount of pain due to the surgery on his vocal cords, etc. but he is writing notes like an insane person and is enjoying limited visitation. Hopes are Dave will be able to move to a step down ward tomorrow, and over time will be able to speak again, but perhaps with a more raspy timbre.

The bullet is still lodged in Dave's neck, and will likely remain there as it is quite close to his spinal cord. As far as I know, the doctors do not believe it will be a problem in the future.

Dave's sole wish is for a baked potato, steak and beer.

Jason's morning started out a little slower. He had an excellent breathing test today which is important for two reasons:

1)The stronger his lungs are the better he can keep them clear and avoid infection or pneumonia, which would mean he would have to be put on a ventilator.
2)Strong lungs mean a well functioning diaphragm, which means muscles are working in places the doctors say they shouldn't work.

Jason's wish was for a diet coke and a milkshake.

Later in the afternoon Jason's feeding tube was removed and he was able to drink a diet coke and eat some icecream. This is important because it means his gag reflex is working well and helping to keep his lungs clear from infection, pneumonia causing debris.

Jason has been very vocal about how tired he is and how much company he can have. He is very much in control of his treatment. He actually kicked me out of his room tonight and told me to go home and rest, which I was able to do because when I grabbed my husband's ass he actually had a little sensation in it...and also a little sensation in his right foot when I rubbed it.

Things are slow, and probably will be for a while. The continued support of everyone will be so important to help both fellers keep their spirits up, but I know I don't even have to ask. You have all been so wonderful. The family of both Dave and Jason can't even begin to express their thanks, and I know it has been crucial to the progress the guys.

Thanks again to everyone.

My Best Friends Shot

Jason Statts

David Williams

LYRA UPDATE:
On June 28, 2008, Jason Statts and Dave Williams were shot in the neck by two thugs after kindly giving the thugs each a beer. The bullet was fired point blank into Jason's neck and passed through into Dave's neck. Jase and Dave were rushed to Memorial Medical Center here in Savannah. Jason suffered a shattered C6 vertebrae. Some of the shattered bone has severed sections of his spinal cord. At this moment in time, Jason can move his arms but has no feeling in his legs. Dave was rushed into surgery. He has a tracheotomy and his breathing is currently being done by a machine. Both are in a lot of pain, and really pissed off. The recovery process is going to be a long one. Both will be receiving treatment for some time to come. Everyone has been amazing, and shown such great support for both Dave and Jason.

Savannah NOW: Band members shot after first gig

Two bandmates had finished playing their first gig downtown and were about to meet with friends in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Instead, they wound up in the hospital, suffering from gunshot wounds. Now police are hunting for two suspects in the shooting.

Jason Statts, 34, a bass player and an art director, and David Williams, 31, a bass player and graphic designer, were shot about 3 a.m. in the 600 block of East 48th Street near Paulsen Street, Savannah-Chatham metro police said. Statts and Williams both were shot in the neck, apparently with the same bullet, said Judy Pal, a metro police spokeswoman. One shot was fired, going through Statts' neck and becoming lodged in Williams' neck, witnesses and police said.

Statts told officers he "felt paralyzed," according to a police report. Both men were rushed by ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center. Statts' injuries were diagnosed as not life-threatening. Williams, however, suffered a traumatic wound that required surgery, Pal said. Family members said he was in stable condition after the surgery, but they feared he would be paralyzed.

Pal said police are certain the victims did not know the shooter. Micah Beard, Statts' brother-in-law, said family and friends had been excited about the start-up of the band, called Surt (The Destroyer), playing its first gig. Everyone now hopes for the recovery of the two wounded band members, Beard said. Friday night, Statts and Williams played at Club LiveWire Music Hall, 307 W. River St. When the show ended, they took separate cars to drop off their equipment. Williams lives a block south from where the two were shot.

As they emerged from their cars, the two bandmates were approached by two men dressed in all black who asked if Statts and Williams "needed anything," Pal said. The victims said they didn't and thought the men had walked away. But a moment later, the two victims were shot. The suspects are described as black, approximately 20 years of age with natural hair or short dreads. They were last seen wearing dark clothing, running east on 48th Street. They were about 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet tall. No further descriptions were available Saturday night.

Anyone with information on Saturday morning's shooting is urged to call the Savannah-Chatham metro police Violent Crimes Unit at 912-651-6728 or CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020.

Another Blow To Fine Art

NY Times: This morning, a Boston-born performance artist, Yazmany Arboleda, tried to set up a provocative art exhibition in a vacant storefront on West 40th Street in Midtown Manhattan with the title, “The Assassination of Hillary Clinton/The Assassination of Barack Obama,” in neatly stenciled letters on the plate glass windows at street level. By 9:30 a.m., New York City police detectives and Secret Service agents had shut down the exhibition, and building workers quickly covered over the inflammatory title with large sheets of brown paper and blue masking tape.
