Eat Flat To Strive Long

I spent the last week trying to find decent vector logos or anything close that matched up with the 2 different Harley Davidson logos that are on the Jack Burton hats. Tonight I painted the first hat worn by Jack at the begining of the film.

Since my silkscreen equipment is set up to handle baseball caps, I had to use some old school methods of transferring my logos onto the hats accurately. Some clear kitchen drawer liner paper always does the trick when you need to frisket out something.

Chanting For Meeting People

Costume building begins. I hit up the local Hobby Lobby today and bought an outrageous amount of stuff. Lucky for me there was a sale on most everything I was buying. Plus I raided the clearance aisle like a mad man.

Dump it out and sort it up.

I have to say, I'm really glad it's so close to christmas season. I had all the red and gold ribbon I could ever want to choose from. There was an entire aisle of just ribbon spools that were like from 3.99 to 5.99. Really great materials.

So now I begin the process of creating a set of over the top Epelletts for the jacket.

Might Move Out Again

I spent the early part of this evening driving around to every local Chinese restaurant and take-out place looking for Chinese newspapers. I used to have a huge stack, but I guess I threw them away. I want them so I can use the characters in the adverts and such to build up an oriental themed background. But I couldn't find anything at all.

Luckily I had a large amount of Chinese paper materials that I had brought back home from the streets in NYC a few years back. The most amazing thing I found which couldn't have been any more perfect for this piece was a poster for the Miss Chinese New York City pageant. The girls are going to represent the girls that are being held captive in the basement of David Lo Pan's hideout.

Using the main color palette to build up a base before I white it back out.

Well Breed As It Is

Finishing a few pairings of donuts. These all use the new and improved processes I've been figuring out to keep them in great condition for years and years. These things will never fall off your wall.

Self From The Dead When Away

So these pieces are all dried from the night before. I'm having to set them aside right now to deal with some other works. You can see the packs and packs of Marshmallow Pumpkin Peeps behind the frames. These are ready to go.

You Need Rest Not Repeat Sleep

Started gluing together the frame bases for the Halloween/Horror pieces. Not really sure what I'm going to call these pieces but they are going to be built as (13) piece sets. With only (3) sets total for a total of (39) pieces. I'm going to wrap up the rest of them and let them set overnight.

Wasting In The On High

My black trucker caps arrived today. I ordered (4) of them from a shop on Amazon. I got (4) just in case I screw something up. These are for the Kurt Russell piece I'm developing for the show at the Plaza. It's going to deal with the duality of the Jack Burton character. The show coincides with the screening of 'Big Trouble In Little China'.

Hail The Canker Sores Hero

Spent the past few nights cutting up balsa wood to build out frames for these Halloween/Horror themed series paintings I'm developing as well as some more donut frames. The donuts never seem to end.

Traveled In Lands Beyond The Seas

I'm begining to pull all the pieces together for the Napoleon costume I'm developing for use at Zombie Walk 2009 and for Halloween of course. I've currently bought (2) cheapo costumes (well not that cheap) to rummage parts from - pants vests etc. Also purchased a real hat because the ones you get with the costumes are foam rubber - garbage.
-
So these pieces are just really base elements that I'm going to retailor and over embellish with all sorts of Napoleon type things.

Kill Your Brother

Was pulling together a set of Playboy Centers that are all horizontal. Going to begin slicing these up to do some mash-ups. Doing it by hand this time however because I was never happy with the distortion the paper shredder caused.... just not clean enough. These are just girls from my junk pile... not the real collection.

Fascination Written And Described

Here's a new set of frames I'm painting. Using a combination of techniques with this one. Again using the colors from the donuts themselves to dictate the pallet of the frame.

Lone Duck Results

Another small set of donuts have been pulled out to make into new works. Today I also ordered a large amount of new balsa wood to build fresh frames with for even more donuts in the future.

I also have a large group of McDonalds cheeseburgers that are getting prepped as well. Thinking of doing all these in silver however. I think if they appear to be cast metal I achieve the look I want more for these particular burgers.

Next Chance Right Now

I bought a donut from the Emerald Cafe in San Diego one morning with my good friend Aaron Barker. That was back in 2004. I didn't eat the thing that day and that seemed to puzzle a few of my friends who saw me transporting this donut back to my hotel room at the W. But it's been sitting in my large collection of unfinished donuts for a really long time. This donut was a first as well... its the first donut I consciencely bought for the purpose of using in a painting. So some 300 or so dount paintings later I'm finally building this one out right. I'm doing the frame in 24k gold leaf with hand cut raised lettering. Here's some highlights of the process.

Hand cutting the lettering and applying it to the frame.

Applying the red guilding coat.

The guilding is finished and ready to dry.

A coating of clear guilding adhesive was laid down and then the gold leaf was applied.
